There are many modern discoveries in France, Africa, and Australia of cave art (see, for example, Lascaux) from prehistory that provide evidence of ritual ceremonial behaviour. Some of these sources date from over 30,000 years ago, as established by carbon dating. Although there is scant direct evidence of sport from these sources, it is reasonable to extrapolate that there were activities during these times that would fit the modern definition of sport.

Local Sport
The North East of England is a veritable hotbed of all sports - Most notably Soccer, but also the birthplace of many world class athletes, golfers, cricketers and a host of others. Horse racing, Motor sports and all forms of Water sports are also catered for in the region. These pages will give just a small insight to the amenities and scope of world class sport throughout the region. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR
2004/05 has been a great year for sport in the North East.
In rugby union, Newcastle Falcons won the Powergen Cup, beating Sale in the Final.
In cricket, Steve Harmison was second highest in the Test bowling rankings in October 2004, making him the world’s highest ranked pace bowler.
In swimming, the winning time of Stephanie Proud in the 200m backstroke at the European Junior Championships ranks her as 5th fastest in the world in 2004.
In basketball, Newcastle Eagles were BBL Trophy winners and BBL Championship play-off winners. And in community sport, there was a record entryin the Great North Run.
And there were some great performances at the Olympics and Paralympics in Athens too, where regional Paralympians Tanni Grey-Thompson, Stephen Miller, Kenneth Churchill, Hazel Robsonand Terry Bywater were all medallists.
For grass roots sport, the picture is also pleasing with participation holding firm in the North East.
